Gov. Brown Signs Bill to Keep Kids in Rear-Facing Car Seats Until 2

Gov. Jerry Brown has signed legislation requiring children to ride in rear-facing car seats until they are at least 2 years old, his office said last Monday.

The legislation replaces current law requiring motorists to “properly secure” children under 8 in the back seat of a vehicle, with kids remaining rear-facing until they are 1.

Assembly Bill 53, by Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia, D-Bell Gardens, will take effect in 2017. It makes an exception for children who are not yet 2 but who weigh at least 40 pounds or are at least 40 inches tall.

Proponents said the legislation could reduce injuries to young children in car crashes. Insurance and medical organizations supported the bill.

Brown, a Democrat, signed the legislation without comment.
